The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign in England and Wales (UCS) voted on July 22 to endorse the International Solidarity Convoy to Ukraine. It also decided to set up a working group to organise the leg of the convoy that will pass through England.
For its part, the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland will join the working group to
coordinate the organisation of the Scottish contribution to the leg. The decision marks a major gain in support for the convoy, given that the UCS is the longest-standing progressive Ukraine solidarity association, having been established in 2014 at the time of the illegal Russian annexation of Crimea. The USC has also established close ties with trade unions in the United Kingdom, work that lay behind the adoption by the 2023 TUC Congress of a strong resolution in support for Ukraine, its working people and their trade union organisations.
The USC is presently campaigning in support of workers from the Zaphorizhzhia Nuclear
Power Plant (ZNPP) who are subject to systematic intimidation, forced labor, basement
interrogations, torture, arbitrary detentions, and long-term imprisonment at the hands of
the Russian occupation authorities.
Commenting on USC’s decision to back the convoy, spokesperson David Acosta said:
«The USC decision is truly good news. It confirms that the basic idea of our international
convoy—to combine the delivery of material aid with consciousness-raising and solidarity-
building—is winning support from growing sections of the Ukraine solidarity movement».
